It all started when we decided that we wanted to try to send a solar powered robotic boat from Los Angeles to Hawaii. We wanted to do something cool that had never been done before.
While researching components for the project, we realized that the limiting component was the thruster. We needed something that could resist saltwater, operate continuously, and be efficient for months on end. Scouring the internet for options, we found hobbyists, students, researchers, and marine robotics companies that were in need of an affordable thruster.We set out to design a new thruster that would be affordable, reliable, and more capable than anything out there to enable these people and many more to explore the ocean. We came up with the T100 Thruster, launched in a 2014 Kickstarter campaign. Since then, they’ve become more popular than we ever could have imagined!
Our constant focus on cost and accessibility make our thrusters, components, and underwater ROV the most affordable on the market while our clear documentation and straightforward designs with open source software and hardware allow for customization, modification, and reconfiguration. Now with our latest release of the BlueROV2 R4, including our Locking Watertight Enclosures, WetLink Penetrators, and Navigator Flight Controller, enthusiasts have the option to purchase the ROV with a 300m depth rating!
Growing from a small operation in Rusty’s garage to a team of 60 people in 5 countries, 49 distributors in 32 countries, and a diverse community of subsea explorers, hobbyists, and professional users all across the world, we hope to continue growing our community and providing accessible, high-quality marine robotics to encourage ocean exploration and inspire ocean stewardship for years to come.
